Each week the Music Feeds team pick a favourite new song from the week that was, wrap it in a bunch of words and present it to you. It’s Music Feeds Faves.

Ratatat – Cream on Chrome

It’s been five years since we’ve heard a peep out of NYC experimental duo Ratatat and this week they made their triumphant return to the scene with a tasty new single, conveniently dropped just before their set at Coachella.

Cream on Chrome is the name of the new offering from the alt-electro duo, who it should be noted are also very skilled multi-instrumentalists. Here they’ve added a taste of funk to their blissful production with some strung out guitars and one heck of a groove. It’s a very exciting look at what’s to come on Ratatat’s long-awaited, but newly announced fifth studio album – due out soon guys! Do you smell a tour on the horizon? In the meantime, bliss-out with this. / Natassia Baroni, Staff Writer

Empress Of – Water Water

A dancefloor-ready track with genuinely gorgeous synthesizers and personal lyrics is a rare thing, but New York-based singer and producer Lorely Rodriguez, aka Empress Of, is making nuanced dance music look easy. Water Water is an early taste of her as-yet-untitled debut album, and was written largely when she was alone in Mexico on New Years Eve.

Crystal Castles – Frail

A crystalline voice converses with music as its frequency and volume pulse ambidextrously. A screeching shrill rips through heavy hard-style thumping. Moments of stillness sit tiny between vast spaces of noise-chaos. Imagine a jagged and violent wrestling match between Grimes and Yolandi Visser, and then record it.

That is what the remaining half of Crystal Castles, Ethan Kath, did. The release of Frail marks a new beginning for Kath who previously worked with vocalist Alice Glass. An edited statement (less acerbic than its original) reads: “I wish my former vocalist the best of luck in her future endeavors. I think it can be empowering for her to be in charge of her own project. It should be rewarding for her.” / Luke Bodley, Presenter

Art Of Anarchy – ‘Til The Dust Is Gone

Those who fancy their Friday served with a side of sweet distortion and a moody lashing of Scott Weiland might like to try the new Art Of Anarchy song, ‘Til The Dust Is Gone on for size. The debut music video release from the rock supergroup, which features Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots/Velvet Revolver), alongside Bumblefoot (Guns N’ Roses) John Moyer (Disturbed) and the Votta brothers is hard proof that aging rockers are still capable of producing more than just misguided reality TV shows and lucrative reunion tours.

The project’s new offering actually delivers the goods, from dusky blues melodies laced with tasty Spanish guitar lines to a heavy, pulsing chorus that strikes all the right chords. The track’s chilled, slow-grooving vibes are the perfect companion for a rainy Autumn arvo. You know, if you don’t have any real friends. / Emmy Mack, Staff Writer

Vic Mensa – U Mad (Ft. Kanye West)

So apparently the kids these days have a new descriptor for shit-hot songs. Forget “jam” or “banger”, it’s all about the word “fire” now. “Get a load of this fire!”, they’ll say, or “this tune is fiyyaaaaaah” they’ll tweet. Kids, am I right?

Well, probably because I’m a thousand years old and mere moments away from the sweet slumber of death, I straight up didn’t get all the flame emojis attached to SoundClouds, that is, until I heard U Mad from Vic Mensa featuring Yeezy. Yeah, I get it now.

The god damn bravado of this song reaches out from the speaker and slaps you across the face with Mensa again proving he is the future of hip-hop, the baton being passed down from Kanye himself. U Mad makes you feel like a fucking king, like you’re finally alive, like you’re aflame. Fire, indeed. / Mitch Feltscheer, Creative Content Director
